REbELing Against Perfection: Why We Chose Homeschooling for Tommy
I used to fear the “different” path. I thought success for my son meant desks, classrooms, and matching society’s milestones. I was wrong.
Homeschooling Tommy wasn’t about giving up on the system—it was about REbELing against a version of perfection that never truly fit him anyway.
Homeschooling Tommy was not an easy decision. In fact, it was one of the hardest choices I have ever made as a mom. Like many parents, I once imagined the “traditional path” for my son—classrooms, school events, and all the milestones society tells us are important. But life taught me something bigger: not every child thrives by following the same pattern.
For Tommy, traditional schooling often created frustration because his body could not always respond the way his mind intended. Choosing homeschooling wasn’t about giving up on him—it was about redefining what success could look like. My dream for Tommy had to change, and in that shift, I found freedom for him to be himself.
Why We Chose Homeschooling Over Traditional Schooling
Homeschooling isn’t about withdrawing from the world—it’s about creating a learning space where the world makes sense to your child. For Tommy, homeschooling allows him to:
Prioritize well-being. His comfort, regulation, and confidence come first—not test scores.
Learn at his own pace. If math excites him one day, we lean into it. If he needs movement breaks, we take them.
Blend learning naturally. Therapy, sensory regulation, life skills, and academics all work together throughout the day.
Embrace different learning styles. Hands-on activities, art, music, movement, and real-world experiences all count as meaningful learning.
This flexibility is something the traditional school system could never fully give him.
The Joy of Learning Through Movement 🎶
One of the most beautiful parts of homeschooling a neurodivergent child is the freedom to make learning joyful. Tommy learns best when his body is in motion. That might mean reading while bouncing on the trampoline, practicing speech therapy while marching to a beat, or dancing to music between lessons.
Learning doesn’t have to be confined to a desk. When children can move, laugh, and explore, their minds open up. And for Tommy, those moments of joy are just as valuable as academics.
Homeschooling Success Doesn’t Always Look Conventional
People often ask: Can homeschooling really work?
My answer is yes—but it may not look the way society expects.
Sometimes success looks like a perfectly written essay. Other times, it looks like spelling words while dancing in the living room or solving math problems after a swim. Sometimes it looks like a child finally feeling calm enough to learn.
Homeschooling isn’t flawless, but it has allowed Tommy to learn in a way that feels authentic, empowering, and sustainable for him. And that matters more to me than checking every traditional box.
The Benefits of Homeschooling a Child With Disabilities
Since making this choice, we’ve seen meaningful benefits:
✨ Greater confidence — Tommy feels proud of his progress and is less pressured to compare himself to others.
✨ Tailored academics — Subjects adapt to his learning style and pace, without the constant noise, movement, and visual overload that can make traditional classrooms overwhelming for him.
✨ Life skills growth — Independence and responsibility are woven into everyday learning.
✨ Family connection — Learning has become something we experience together.
✨ Holistic health — Therapies, exercise, sensory regulation, and rest are integrated into his day naturally.
Homeschooling Is Our New Dream 🌟
Homeschooling Tommy has shown me that education isn’t about fitting in—it’s about helping him thrive in his own skin.
My dream is no longer centered around the traditional path. Instead, it’s about Tommy learning with joy, confidence, and freedom.
Success does not look the same for every child. For Tommy, it means growing into his full potential without being limited by someone else’s definition of achievement.
And I believe that may be the greatest education of all.
💚 At the end of the day, homeschooling Tommy has reminded me that society’s standards do not measure success, but by the growth, peace, and joy my son experiences. Sometimes, the bravest choice is the one that looks different.
The “Tommy Pack”: Real-World Learning
At Route T21, learning doesn’t stay on paper—it shows up in real life.
That’s why we created the Tommy Pack: part of Tommy’s daily real-world curriculum, where skills are built through meaningful work and repetition with purpose.
When an order comes in, Tommy practices functional math by counting, grouping, and checking items in a way that finally connects. Packing and sealing each envelope also strengthens his fine motor skills, coordination, focus, and independence through hands-on learning that matters.
We chose hemp intentionally. It’s durable, compostable, sensory-friendly, and free from the chemical aftertaste found in many disposable products. Hemp is one of the most sustainable materials available—strong enough to perform well, yet clean enough to return to the earth responsibly.
Each pack includes hemp straws or hemp utensils, and a seeded thank-you card hand-stamped by Tommy, designed to be planted and grow into something new.
This is more than a purchase. Every pack represents a completed task, a real responsibility, and another step toward independence. It’s work with purpose—and that changes everything.
And you’re not just supporting it—you’re helping build the solution.
👉 Support the work. Support the growth.
